‘Global Warming is not a crisis’

Summary - This article talks about three experts from the “Intelligence Squared” program in London argue that Global warming is not a crisis, while three other argue against that motion.  They had a debate with eachother, both parties making good points and affecting the audience because they voted before and after the debate and the results were different.  At the end of the debate around 46% of the voters were for the proposition and around 42% were still opposed to it.

Response - I’m not an expert so of course I don’t really know what I’m talking about, btu if it was that simple that it just was not a crisis then why is the everyone making it out to more than it is, theres got to be something to it that’s making everyone worry so much.

10 Tips to fight Global Warming

Summary1.)Replace 5 incandescent light bulbs in your home

2.)Take the train intstead of the plane.

3.)Use a fan instead of turning on the AC.

4.)Replace old refrigarors.

5.)Take a short shower.

6.)Insulate your home.

7.)Dry clothes on a line.

8.)Less red meat.

9.)Take public transportation

10.)Support the creation of energy.

Response -  I think I might do a few of these, the ones that are easy any way.

Visual Metaphors

*Visual Metaphors*

  • Someone smoking a cigarette and scarring their lungs -like smoke emissions scarring the atmosphere.
  • A person litering out the car window – Pollution on the earth.
  • Drinking too much alcohol, getting sick – Too much gas burned into the atmosphere hurting it.
  • Pouring water over a think ice chunk – Shows the polar ice caps melting.
  • Dropping a piece of trash in your drink – Shows what it does to pollute the ocean.

The one I like the best is the person scarring their lungs with a cigarette because I think it’s a clever and matches better than any other one I have up there.

Clinton, Obama, Offer Big Plans On Global Warming

Summary- This article talks about Barack Obama and Hillary Clinton and what they say they plan to do about climate change.  They both are on the same page with a few things about it.  They both have their own detailed plan.  Clinton wants to do something called Carbon Neutral Mortgage Association which is meant to make it easier to get loans for efficient energy in homes.  Obama supports a National Low Carbon Fuel Standard which would require less carbon dioxide emissions by 10 percent.

Response- I think that both of these are good ideas and that we should go through with both of them if we can afford it.

Global Warming Timeline

Summary- This article is a long list of dates from the 1800s to the current year.  It shows different information about how the climate has been changing over the years.  On this timeline it does not have a comment for every year, just whenever there is something worth recording.  It’s a good way to see how global warming has affected the earth.

Response- I think it is suprising how much global warming actually has affected the earth.

Possible Expert Interviews

  • Chris Horner -  Hi, My name is Alec Faulhaber.  I am doing a video documentary on global warming for my English II class.  I was wondering since your an expert on the topic if I could interview you.  I could meet you somewhere and at a time that is convenient to you.  I could give you examples of questions I would ask you in advance.

Global Warming, Hunters Make Polar Bears a Must Addition to Endangered Species List

Summary - This article is written by Vicky Meretksky about the effects global warming is having on Polar Bears.  Polar bears are on the verge on becoming an extinct animal because the polar ice caps are melting.  This makes things a lot harder for polar bears causing many of them to die out.  It is predicted that “Two-thirds of polar bear population is expected to decline by 2050″.  This makes it harder for them to fish for food, the ice caps are essential to a polar bear’s survival.

Response - I think that is sad. I also heard something about Polar bears resorting to cannibalism because they are so hungry and so scarce on food.  I think it’s horrible that global warming has caused them to turn on to each other for survival.

Climate Change: Just deal with it?

Summary -This article was written by Alan Zarembo and it is about a cheaper way of fighting global warming.  A man named Roger A Pielke Jr. is an environment policy expert and he has an idea of coping with global warming and adapting rather than spending trillions of dollars on fighting it.  He thinks that the effects of global warming are not as bad as some scientists think they are.  There is other scientists who say that if we could just simply adapt to something like global warming, then it would of already happened, instead the climate keeps changing.

Response – I think that if global warming was as easy as that to fix then we would not be worried about it.  We can adapt to it as much as we can as it comes but I don’t think we can just solve the whole problem just like that.  We should do other things to reduce climate change.

Global Warming Rushes Timing of Spring

Summary - This article was written by Seth Borenstein an AP Science Writer.  He is talking about how global warming is affecting the timing of spring every year.  Spring keeps coming at different times every year he says.  He says this messes things up for animals who have a biological clock that runs by season.  There is a lot more pollen in the air at and earlier time than normal to.

Response - I don’t mind this because I like spring so spring could come early every year and I would not complain.

Reflection

Posted in Uncategorized on April 14, 2008 by alecmfaul

I have learned about the effects of different things from global warming and how they effect the earth.  I was suprised at how much people disagree with global warming I did not know there was any doubt I thought it was a fact.  The effects on the natural world like animals and the rainforest and things should be what our segment is about.  I will need more animals and stake and their negative affects.  I did read an article on penguins going through changes in their environment that could help.

States suing EPA over Global warming

The U.S. got really mad at the EPA because they were supposed to answer a file stating whether they should regulate greenhouse gas emissions such as carbon dioxide and when asked about it they had decided nothing.  They were asked to give their opinion in 60 days.  The chairman of the EPA when asked said “We will review the petition and respong appropriately.”

Some researchers see no link between Global warming and Hurricane Activity

This article is showing that all the hurricanes that have been happening are not being caused by global warming like some rumors that are going around.  Chelsea Landsea is a scientistist at the National Hurricane Center says that global warming is not having an effect on the hurricanes.  Landsea – “there is no conclusive evidence that global warming has significantly enhanced or otherwise affected the number or intensity of hurricanes.”

With Climate Change comes floods

Summary – This article is saying that when the temperature in a certain climate changes to a higher temperature, it is more likely for a flood to occur.  One reason why this would occur is because when the temperature rises so does the sea level because water expands when it gets warmer. Because of the rising sea level, bigger storm surges are more likely.

Response – I think that if this is all true then that sucks because I don’t want to be flooded.  But at least I don’t live on a coast or anything like that so I have a pretty good chance of not getting flooded.  I hope for all our sake that they are exaggerating.

Penguins Helped and Hurt by changing climate

Summary – A man named David Ainley studies Adelies penguins.  He is one of the most respected penguin researchers in the world.  He tries to see how global warming is effecting these penguin colony’s environment.  He put computer chips into each penguin so he could keep track of things for each penguin to make his decision.  He also talks about how a glacier at one penguin colony was melting and ruining their nests, washing away their eggs.  He speaks highly of the penguins and he wants to help them so that global warming will not harm them anymore.

Response – I thought this story was interesting I did not mind learning about penguins and their way of life.  I think that it’s horrible that global warming is effecting them so negatively.  I don’t like to think of that because I know I don’t do the things I could do to reduce global warming
